OAPs' Christmas lunch

Honours Programme students from Year 12 & Year 13 organised a traditional Christmas lunch for guests from Norley Hall Residential Home and Ancliffe Residential Care Home.
The guests were entertained by students from the college music department, played bingo and took part in a raffle.
The guests from Norley Hall included George who won a teddy in the raffle, which he planned to give to his new great grandson, Seth. From Ancliffe Residential Home the guests included Daisy, a 93 year old resident. After the lunch there was singing and dancing, and a good time was had by all.

Christmas shoebox appeal

Every year, SJR students take part in the Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Shoebox Appeal. This year a record number of boxes were created, each one designed to give a child special Christmas gifts. The boxes will travel all over the world to countries where children are most in need and they will be very much appreciated.
The students enjoyed creating the boxes, filling them with useful and fun items and they will also enjoy tracking their journey on the internet.

Children in Need

The students and staff at St John Rigby were in full support of Children In Need Day.
The Student Council organised lots of fun activities to raise money, such as a cake stall, leg waxing, an arm wrestling competition, a raffle and a guess the bear’s name competition.
An excellent effort was made by all, and £900 was raised for a great cause.

Photography students at the races

A2 Photography students spent an afternoon at the races, capturing the characters they saw there for their brief on British Society.
On arrival, the manager of Haydock Park kindly showed the staff and students around the venue, and suggested some ideas to the students.
They captured lots of fantastic images, depicting the range of people and activities of the location.

Music residential trip

Tutors took the Music Department to Hagg Farm in the wilds of Derbyshire to buckle down to some performance and composition work. A fantastic time was had by all!

Art visit to Drumcroon

A group of level 2 BTEC Art students took part in a visit to Drumcroon Arts Centre in Wigan, to study a famous British Sculptor.

Fourteen SJR students spent the day at the Wish FM studios with presenter Chris Milow and Creative Director Pete Craggs as part of the Wish FM Scholarship Programme, which is run jointly by college and the radio station.

Wish FM Open Day Broadcast

Wish FM.visited SJR on our recent Saturday Open Day, to cover the event and speak to members of the college community about what was happening. Broadcaster Chris Milow interviewed students and staff, including Principal Peter McGhee, while parents and prospective students looked round the campus and found out about the wide range of courses on offer. History visit to the Imperial War Museum North

In October the History Department took 35 students to the Imperial War Museum in Manchester as part of their studies on the 'Experience of Warfare'.

Chester Zoo Visit

BTEC Business Extended Certificate students enjoyed a glorious sunny day on their visit to Chester Zoo to learn about Customer Care for their Business assignments.
They watched the animals lazing around in the hot weather as well as checking out all the facilities available for customers at the zoo, and enjoying an excellent lecture on the Zoo’s Customer Service.  An enjoyable and informative day was had by all.

SJR Link With Cambridge University

St John Rigby College has been selected by Cambridge University as one of four schools and colleges in the northwest to be part of their exclusive HE+ Programme. Eleven Year 12 students recently visited the University as part of this exciting initiative.

Students at Liverpool Hope University
University Visits

All our Year 12 Level 3 students visited a University for a day. The universities visited included Chester, Edge Hill, Lancaster, Liverpool Hope, Liverpool John Moores, Salford and UCLAN. The day included a variety of activities, such as subject led talks, student life talks, tours of university campuses, student finance and personal statement writing. All the students found the day to be extremely enjoyable, informative and insightful.

SJR Concert Evening

This year's annual Music Concert Evening took place at the end of June. Audiences were dazzled by solo and ensemble performances and even enjoyed world premieres of student compositions.

Midsummer Arts Festival

This year's Summer Arts Festival was held on Monday 27th June, and involved work from all areas of the Arts & Communication Division. Visitors were greatly impressed by both the range and quality of the student work on display.

Students at the zoo
Chester Zoo Visit

The Psychology department took a group of students on a trip to Chester Zoo.
The students enjoyed the day, and applied their knowledge of psychology to a real world setting. They looked at aggressive and altruistic behaviour, and attachment of animals.
The students also carried out an individual observation on a chosen animal.

SJR Students Raise Funds For Care Home

Students from the BTEC Business course at SJR planned a number of activities to raise money at a summer fair for Cardinal Heenan House, a residential care home in Roby Mill.

Up Holland High School Sports Tournament

Eighty Up Holland High School Year 7 pupils were invited into college this month, to compete in a Rounders or a Football tournament hosted by the BTEC Sport Diploma students.

An SJR team have won a prestigious annual football tournament. The college team triumphed in a closely contested final in the Bolton Wanderers Inter-college Tournament.

Rigfest 2011

A celebration of college music and bands took place in St John Rigby’s annual Rigfest event.
The bands that performed were mainly made up of college students who study A level Music or Music Technology.
