A group of AS and A2 French students spent their half-term on the first leg of an exchange with the prestigious Lycée David d’Angers in Wigan’s twin town of Angers.

Honours Programme Students Go Underground

Earlier this month Honours Programme Students visited the National Mining Museum near Barnsley. During the visit students met coal miners, went underground and learned something of the science of coal mining. Afterwards they debated the politics of the Miners' Strike of the 1980s.

Physics Visit to CERN

A group of eight Physics students and two members of staff from SJR set off on a three day journey of discovery to CERN, the world’s most iconic scientific research facility in Geneva.  At CERN, the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments are used to study the basic constituents of matter — the fundamental particles. By studying what happens when these particles collide, physicists learn about the laws of nature.

Lessons from Auschwitz

Rebecca Johnson has made a big impact in college with her display to commemorate Holocaust Memorial day. The SJR student, who is following A level courses in History, Geography, RE and Maths, created the display as part of her involvement in the national Lessons from Auschwitz Project.

The Christian Spirit Award winners
Christian Spirit Award

The Christian Spirit Award is presented to students who have made a significant contribution to the College or to the wider community. These students lead by example in demonstrating the values that underpin the ethos of St John Rigby College. The winners, Michael Owens and Emily Bragg, were presented with their awards by Principal Peter McGhee, who praised the work both students had done. He also commended the other students who had been nominated for the award, expressing thanks for the contribution all have made.

Up Holland students
Up Holland High School Link

Over the last six weeks, St John Rigby College Music and Music Technology Department has been working with Up Holland High School students on a composition task including film and game music and sound design.
Students from the high school were brought to college by Alistair Roberts, the school's Head of Music, where SJR tutors James Gresty and Michael Cook taught the group how to use the college's professional software and the skills of composition. SJR students from the Music Technology and Music department helped the groups both with the software and with compositional advice. All the Up Holland pupils were presented with a certificate of participation from SJR Principal Peter McGhee on completing the 6 week workshops.

The Carol Service
Cafod Carol Service

Once again St John Rigby students excelled themselves at the annual Cafod Carol Service at St Theresa's Church in December. Combined with St John Fisher High School, and with guest appearances from St Mary's & St John's Primary School and St Theresa's Primary School, students and pupils performed to a packed Church.
The event was certainly full of festive cheer and everyone had a great time; nevertheless, everyone was reminded of the Cafod mission after guest speaker, Geoff O'Donoughue, told stories of his work witth Cafod around the world.

Community Day Fun
College Band's £100,000 Prize

SJR student Katie Lloyd and her co-musicians in their band The Lottery Winners have won the UK’s national music competition Live and Unsigned.  The final was held at the O2 arena in London and out of 15,000 entrants, The Lottery Winners (pictured right, playing at this year’s College Community Day) were crowned victorious.

Students celebrate
Best Ever Exam Results

St John Rigby College’s students achieved a record 98% pass rate for their Advanced Level courses. This included 29 out of 39 courses having a pass rate of 100%, but the best news for students was that high grade passes (grades A*, A and B) increased by more than 5 %, with many students achieving the new A* grade.

Archbishop Visits SJR

Archbishop Patrick Kelly combined his visit to St John Rigby College in September 2010 with a joint Service of Thanksgiving and Dedication in memory of two extra special and much loved people who passed away in 2010 – member of staff Giovanna Mula and former student Gillian Prescott.

College Community Day

Students and staff at St John Rigby joined together for the annual Community Day celebration to mark the end of the academic year. The event included an enthusiastically contested "It's A Knockout" competition, followed by music from several college performers. In addition, a range of activities and challenges were provided all over the college campus.

Midsummer Arts Festival

On Monday 21st June the college hosted its annual Midsummer Arts celebration. This event showcases the students' talents, with exhibits of art, film, media, graphics and photographic work and live performances of dance, music and drama developed for the current season.

Rachel Crone

SJR Student Wins Design Award

SJR student Rachel Crone has won a worldwide design competition. Rachel, who is studying A levels in Graphic Design, English Language & Literature and Geography entered a global competition to design a summer festival T shirt for “Fenchurch T Fest” and scooped the £200 prize. She was advised to enter the competition by her Design teacher following excellent progress and work in college.
After SJR, Rachel will be progressing to an Art Foundation Course at Manchester University.

Sport relief

Sports Relief 2010

St John Rigby students and staff were out in force this week to raise money for the Sport Relief 2010 event. Over 500 participants covered the course, many wearing a range of bizarre and exotic fancy dress costumes.

SJR Students Visit Auschwitz

Students from St John Rigby College paid a visit to the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland.
Psychology, Sociology and History students took part in the visit which was linked to their A level modules – Psychology of Obedience, Anti-Semitism and Crime and Deviance.  During the visit the students gained a greater insight into the relevant areas of their courses.
