This year's annual Music Concert Evening took place at the end of June. Audiences were dazzled by solo and ensemble performances and even enjoyed world premieres of student compositions.
Performances ranged from brass solo pieces through to students' own arrangements of popular songs. These included an acoustic duet who performed ‘Fast Car’ by Tracey Chapman, performances of Bob Marley’s ‘Is This Love’ and ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ by Bill Withers.
There were some superb performances from our brass soloists, including a beautiful baritone solo from Concerto by Horovitz, and an excerpt from Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto. These brass performers later joined in on a captivating performance of Kate Rusby’s ‘My Young Man’, which featured just a solo voice backed by a small brass ensemble.
The Jazz ensemble performed a medley of tracks that provided some more light hearted moments. They managed to move from their 2001: A Space Odyssey introduction (based on Strauss’s ‘Also Sprach Zarathustra’) straight into an arrangement of the Rocky theme tune which proved to be a real crowd pleaser! The evening closed with a powerful arrangement of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’.
The evening went very smoothly, and was extremely well attended by students, staff, parents and friends alike. Comments afterwards were full of praise for the talent of St John Rigby students, and the event made for a wonderful evening's entertainment.
