History visit to the Imperial War Museum North

Students exploring the exhibitions

In October the History Department took 35 students to the Imperial War Museum in Manchester as part of their studies on the 'Experience of Warfare'. During the morning students were able to look at some of the fascinating displays and picture shows whilst engaging with activities like the 'Russian tank gunner'. Students also examined the 'War Correspondents' exhibition, a vivid portrayal of the dangers of war reporting during the twentieth century.

After a short lunch, students then participated in an artefact handling session, examining objects from the First World War, Iraq and Afghanistan. This was a superb opportunity for the students to experience history 'first-hand' and the artefacts generated considerable interest and discussion as to their origins and purpose. At the end of the day, a few brave souls ventured up the 29 metre air-shard viewing platform, which provided some outstanding views of Manchester. Following a quick visit to the museum shop, students then returned to college. A tiring, but enjoyable and informative day for all parties concerned!
